Bloodroot Blades makes high-end cutlery, and is based in Athens, Georgia. The two man operation, of Luke Snyder and David Van Wyk has been making kitchen knives since 2009, when David came to Luke, a part-time hunting and utility knife maker, for a new custom kitchen tool. The two have since taken their love of repurposing items that still have tons of potential left in them, creating beautiful working tools, and playing with fire and steel, and turned it into one of the most intriguing and impressive knife outfits around.
Luke and I were put in touch with one another through an acquaintance, and have since become friends, through a common passion - knifemaking and design. Luke has an addiction to learning why something works, how to make it better, and then trying to perfect it, with his own little spin.
This knife features a very nice and user-friendly profile, as well as a thin grind. Luke really knocks his "laseresque" grinds out of the park, and this is no exception. The knife is ground so that both a left-hander and right-hander can use it, and sharpen it up 50/50. The grind is flat, with partial convex, which allows the knife to be very thin behind the edge, while enhancing food release. It has a great balance of both, and the convexing isn't intrusive, down to the edge as many knives lately seem to be. Another definite plus of this knife is the beautiful distal taper, from heel to tip.
The steel in this knife is from reclaimed saw blades (L6 carbon steel), and is hardened to approximately 64hrc. This knife will hold a very steep edge for a long time, while being nicely "calm" in terms of reactivity. The handle on this knife is different than any other you might see. It is constructed with a hammered copper ferrule cap, wenge wood ferrule, restaurant prep table spacer and African blackwood handle base. All materials in this knfe are reclaimed or recycled, with the exception of the blackwood, which was purchased from a reputable dealer.
Once again, Luke nailed this knife!
